Black History Education
We share our history and culture through our yearly exhibit, Black History program and educational lectures that highlight the many ways Black Americans have shaped and strengthened our nation. Our goal is to inspire our community to recognize that Black history is American history.
“Intelligence plus character-
that is the goal of true education.”
Martin Luther King Jr.
Black History education for everyone
Petaluma Blacks for Community Development is dedicated to preserving and sharing the stories, achievements, and culture of Black people throughout history. Each February, our Black History Month celebrations bring together residents, students, and community leaders for a month of reflection, creativity, and joy. Through performances, exhibits, and special events, we honor the past while inspiring the next generation to see themselves as part of an ongoing legacy of excellence and resilience.
PBCD also partners with local schools and educators to bring Black history to life in classrooms across Sonoma County. Our work includes community lectures, concerts, and art exhibitions that explore both historical and contemporary contributions of Black Americans. By connecting education with experience, we help ensure that Black history is not confined to a single month but celebrated as an essential part of Petaluma’s story all year long.
“If a race has no history, if it has no worthwhile tradition.”
“It becomes a negligible factor in the thought of the world, and it stands in danger of being exterminated.”
Carter G. Woodson,
Founder of Black History Month
What We Do
Every February, our Black History Month programs bring hundreds together for music, lectures, exhibits, and art. But our work doesn’t stop in February — it continues all year.
